John Ruskin's "Sesame and Lilies", first published in 1865, stands as a classic 19th-century statement on the natures and duties of men and women. Although widely popular in its time, the work in its entirety has been out of print since the early 20th century. This volume reunites the two halves of the work: "Of Kings' Treasuries", in which Ruskin critiques Victorian manhood, and "Of Queens' Gardens", in which he counsels women to take their places as the moral guides of men and urges the parents of girls to educate them to this end. Feminist critics of the 1960s and 1970s regarded "Of Queens' Gardens" as an exemplary expression of repressive Victorian ideas about femininity, and they paired it with John Stuart Mill's more progressive "Subjection of Women". This volume, by including the often ignored "Of Kings' Treasuries", offers readers full access to Ruskin's complex and sometimes contradictory views on men and women. The accompanying essays place "Sesame and Lilies" within historical debates on men, women, culture and the family. Elizabeth Helsinger examines the text as a meditation on the pleasures of reading; Seth Koven gives a wide-ranging account of how Victorians read "Sesame and Lilies"; and Jan Marsh situates the work within controversies over educational reform.
Unto this Last offers Ruskin's passionate responses to these socio-economic problems. It first appeared as a series of four long essays in Cornhill Magazine in 1860. Ruskin's fascination with things like the intricacies of architecture and medieval guilds of craftsman, like stonemasons and carpenters, made him have a deep respect for the labor of all workers.

According to Ruskin, these articles were "violently criticized," forcing the publisher to cease publication after four months. To counter this attack, Ruskin published his work in book format in May of 1862. His work looks at social and economic implications and is very critical of the capitalist economists of the 18th and 19th centuries. In this sense, Ruskin is a precursory advocate of social economy. Because the essay also attacks the destructive effects of industrialism upon the natural world, some historians have seen it as anticipating the Green Movement.
Ruskin had interrupted the composition of Modern Painters for his architectural studies. He now returned to the earlier work, completing it with volumes 3 and 4 in 1856 and volume 5 in 1860. He also lectured on art and defended the Pre-Raphaelites, but his concerns were inevitably drifting further toward social criticism as a way of transforming society. In reality, he had dropped the integument of art from his sermons, and following the lead of Thomas Carlyle, he began to inveigh directly against the values of the political economists. The year 1860 marks the official turning point in his interests, for Ruskin published a series of social essays in the Cornhill Magazine that he later collected as Unto This Last. Ruskin's attack on the dehumanized ethic of modern industrial capitalism drew a bitter response from readers, but it influenced the thinking of many reformers in the developing Labour movement.
